Does a Chiropractic Adjustment Hurt?

“IS THE CHIROPRACTIC EXAM OR ADJUSTMENT GOING TO HURT?”

Dr. Nathan connecting with the innate wisdom of the body through touch.Whether you’re coming to us in tremendous pain or fearful of what is going to happen, we want to assure you that you are in the best of hands. Our exams are non-invasive and done over clothing. The adjustments at our office are extremely gentle. We use about the amount of pressure needed to test the ripeness of an avocado. We understand what it might be like to be fearful of something new. That’s why we work diligently to ensure you have the most pleasant experience with us.

YOUR FIRST CHIROPRACTIC VISIT

At your first appointment, the doctor will lead you to a private and cozy exam room to discuss your health history. Bringing X-rays or MRI’s/CT scans are helpful for the doctor to look over and explain the clinical findings with you.

The doctor will then do a digital scan of your nervous system, determine your brain’s awareness of your spine through balance, and check ranges of motion in your spine and any extremity necessary.

Each person that comes to us has a unique history of physical, chemical or emotional stress on their bodies. That means that each person’s spine feels and moves differently. We take this into consideration when adjusting you.

THE CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT

Dr. Nathan has trained extensively in modern, gentle, low force and non-manipulative techniques, as well as traditional chiropractic techniques. Through gentle, specific adjustments along your spine, tension is released from your nerve system, thus allowing your body to experience more of its potential. We have had the honor of adjusting brand new babies and hundred year old patients, athletes looking for greater performance, and parents looking for more energy and ease.

WHAT ABOUT POPPING OR CRACKING?

First of all, not everyone who gets adjusted with us will hear a popping or cracking… maybe ever! Because each person’s spine is different, the adjustment is customized.

If  you were to hear a popping sound in your spine, it would happen with the littlest of force and with your permission. The adjustment will never feel like a Sumo wrestling match.

In case you’re curious, popping and cracking in the spine occurs when a joint (made up of two opposing forces) gets stuck together, creating a bit of suction. When the suction between these two opposing forces releases, you may hear the “crack” sound. This is actually the vacuum release of gas within the joint capsule fluid as the joint begins to move again.

WHAT THE ADJUSTMENT FEELS LIKE

After your first chiropractic adjustment you may feel:

  • More flexible
  • Greater range of motion
  • Less pain
  • Relaxed/Peaceful
  • Energized
  • More ease throughout the entire body
  • A natural increase in your breathing

Some patients don’t notice any changes right away while others note muscular soreness, akin to “working out”.  These are all normal responses in the body as the nervous system, spinal column and the muscles and fascia that attach to the spinal column are responding to the adjustment. These physiological responses can be attributed to an increase in endorphins, an increase in vascular system activity, a greater awareness of the body, and a decrease in stress hormones.
